the night before Christmas was a difficult one for me. my stomach was in extreme pain, i had the chills and i could not fall asleep. as i was lying in bed, one of the first things that came to my mind was Mary. she was the girl who gave birth to Jesus in a cave.
i heard a sermon about the birth of Jesus a few days before and one thought that stuck out to me was that Mary was all alone when she was giving birth. she did not have doctors, a nurse or probably even Joseph to help her during the actual birth. i was stunned when i heard this because that seems impossible to me from what i have heard about giving birth from all the mothers i know.
on Christmas Eve i thought about what Mary was called to do. she had such confidence in the Lord to give birth to her soon-to-be son. she must of had such strength and faithfulness to do what the Lord was telling her she would do. i cannot imagine the pain she went through to give birth all by herself, in a cold cave and with no medicine. i have many questions i would love to ask Mary about what went through her head the day the angel told her she was going to give birth to the Messiah (Luke 1:31) or the moment she realized she was going to have a baby without having sex or how she got through the pregnancy all alone. for now, i will just marvel at how God decided to bring His Son into this world to become human.
He picked a way that was not fancy- a lowly manger. He picked a way that no other person has entered the world through- a virgin birth. He picked a way that is a glory that only He can have.
God set it up so from the beginning Jesus would be extraordinary and more than just a human. Jesus is fully God and fully man. He came down to earth to save humans from their sins. humans had (and still have) no way of creating a Savior for ourselves. God had to send His Son to be our Savior and He picked a way that glorified Himself, but yet it was such a humble way.
when i was feeling sick and wanting to fall asleep the night before celebrating Jesus' birthday, God wanted to remind me of who my Savior is and how He used a faithful young girl to birth Jesus into this world. He has and will continue to use the unexpected people who have faith in Him.

a special party.
Christmas- a time to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ or to put it like how my friend tells her children, to have a birthday party for Jesus. here in good ol' America, we celebrate by decorating trees, making dozens (or hundreds) of cookies, going to sit on Santa's lap, watching Elf, gathering together with family, giving and receiving gifts, and many more "Christmas" related activities.
some people know that i am not your typical fan of all the ways that we celebrate Christmas (ex. i do not intentionally listen to Christmas music or watch many Christmas movies). i do love to make Christmas cookies and gathering around the table with my relatives. something i am just trying to figure out is truly how do we put the Christ back into Christmas? and no i am not just saying that to be cliche. i want to know how do we celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior? i do not think there is one way, but i do believe we are called to honor and glorify God. this means we put Him before ourselves. Christmas has become more about winter activities and presents than about Jesus.
another factor into this discussion i am having with myself is that for the last 5 months i have worked at a place with Christmas in the title. the whole point of Operation Christmas Child is to spread the name of Jesus by using a shoe box full of gifts as a starting point to do that. they use gift giving and Christmas as a way to spread the Gospel.
this makes me wonder, how do people in other countries or cultures that follow Jesus celebrate His birth? additionally, what do people who do not believe in Jesus think Christmas means?
these are questions i have and do not expect anyone to answer all for me. celebrating Jesus is a wonderful thing. Christmas should be a celebration of His love, His sacrifice of coming to earth and His grace. He is worthy of our time, celebration and yes a party.
how do you celebrate Jesus' birth? what do you think a celebration of His birth, love and sacrifice should include?
p.s. some of you might find this amusing. i went caroling for the first time last week to an elderly home with Source. we first did crafts with the folks there and made them gift baskets. then we went to deliver the gifts while caroling. the smiles on their faces were priceless. i realized that i do like Christmas music when caroling.

looking past the computer and desk.
i often forget how incredible my job is. if anyone has asked me how it is going, they probably have heard me say that i do not like sitting at a desk all day while working on a computer. i still do not. but, maybe i forgot to mention this when the question was asked, i also love my job. i am getting paid to tell the media to tell people in the upper midwest about an organization thats mission is giving simple gifts to children all around the world. but wait, it does not stop there. not only do they get a shoe box with school supplies, toys and hygiene items, they also are able to hear the Gospel. at almost every shoe box distribution the Gospel is preached and a 12 week discipleship program is offered. thank you Lord for this awesome opportunity and blessing of a job. i want and pray for more children to know Jesus.
if you want to know more about OCC, please ask me or check out the website (had to do some free pr while writing this) www.samaritanspurse.org/occ. national collection week ends on nov. 19 (find drop-off locations on the website), but you can always give your shoe box to me up until dec. 21st.
one last thing. if you know of a job opening after dec. 21 that has anything to do with pr, coffee, nonprofits, baking, nature, or people....let me know. please and thank you.

love your neighbor.
my friend and i were driving home from minneapolis having a conversation about how to love, reach out, and help people who are homeless. this is something i have been thinking about since i started hanging out downtown over the past three years.
i am not sure there is one exact solution for every person we see holding a cardboard sign on the corner of washington and 35 or sitting at the bus stop. part of the solution; however, has to be love. we are commanded to love our neighbor (mark 12).
who are my neighbors? i am quickly learning that they are more than just the people in the two houses next to mine. the people i need to view as my neighbor are those who i come in contact with. my coworkers, my family, the waitress, the checkout lady at the grocery store, the people i sit next to in church and every person i walk or drive by. no matter if any of these people have a home or not, they are my neighbor. they all should be loved.
this does not mean we are called to give a homeless person all the money we have in our wallet every time we drive by them. it does mean we need to acknowledge them, make them feel human and listen to the Holy Spirit of how it is we can best love them. maybe we will be prompted to give them the money or gift card in our wallet or the apple in our bag. it could also just be finding out their story.
i am often scared to give homeless people money because they might use it on alcohol or something they don't really need. i am not sure where this idea came from. everyone assumes this, but who really actually finds out how homeless people use the money they are give? i am realizing that i really need to trust God with however He tells me to love. this is with whoever i am in interacting with. i also need to realize that the Lord commands us to help the poor which could mean giving them the $5 i was planning to use on my lunch.
one thing i told my friend, who waits at the bus stop every day seeing the same homeless people is that if she learns their stories she will then be able to understand who they are. when we learn a person's story, we learn pretty quickly how they spend their time and money.
Lord, i pray that You help me love better, especially the people who i often do not know how to love. teach me to treat every person i interact with like they are Your creation. thank you God that each person, homeless or not, has a story. i want to know those stories. thank you that my money is not mine, but Your money God. teach me to view it as that. let me not hold my money tightly but loosely so that You can use it to help those in need. God, you are the Creator of every human being and the Giver of all things. i praise you. Amen.

not my will, but Yours be done.
when i stop trying to figure out my life, i am able to see how God is constantly working out every moment. during each minute of my day i have a God who delights in me. as i rest in that truth, i can stop worrying. i can see the Lord (not necessarily the plan) more. tonight, i saw this love of my faithful Papa. he knew exactly who i needed to have a conversation with about what is going on in my life. i am grateful that i can rest in God who so deeply cares about my life.
His timing is perfect.

like a river.
tonight, God's love to me is like a river.
it is a river that quenches those who thirst.
a river that gives life.
the water is pure and refreshing.
it has a current that keeps flowing.
this river is full of water that rushes towards those that need it,
in such a gentle way.
it twists and turns to keep seeking,
and never stops pursuing.
this river rejuvenates those who are weary,
heals those who are sick,
and makes clean those who are dirty.
this river reaches out before needing to be reached into.
God is teaching me something. i often look to Him like He is a well of water that i have to find. a well that will only come give me life and love when i want it. a well that i have to work for to be refreshed by. tonight, God told me that His love is like a river that is rushing to me at all times. He came to me first and will continue to pursue after me. no matter where i am at in life, He is a river that is always there and moving in me. this river is not something i have to work to find because it will never fail me.
this river is something i need to just be at to know it is there.

transition is hard.
the title of this entry seems like an understatement. every part of my life reminds me of the word transition. my job is ending in two months, my living situation is temporary, my friendships are changing, and the list goes on. i do have consistency, but that does not make it easy. i must face it, i am in a time of transition. this is why i have told many people that transition is something you cannot teach or really prepare for because it is different for everyone.
so what am i learning during this transition?
i am blessed. even though it might not always "feel" that way. Jesus is never going to leave or forsake me. fixing my eyes on Him is how i am going through this awkward, unknown stage of life. God reminds me daily that life is hard, but so good because He is always there. i saw a note i took during a sermon i heard during my spring break trip. it was a good reminder since i am always wanting to know what is next...
i have a lot of questions about my life, especially about the future. but you know what...that is okay. GOD IS PEACE, REST, BEAUTY, STRENGTH, GRACE, MERCY, LOVE, AND LIFE.
He is worthy of my attention. He is my clarity. He is my sanity.

ps. listen to this song. it is truth we can proclaim.
